Again and Again Ela Notice and Note
Have you been wanting to implement the Notice & Annotation strategies in your classroom, only you've been as well overwhelmed with where to beginning? I have a confession… I'm talking near myself!
I read the book Notice and Note (which I highly recommend) at least two years ago. I only gathered enough backbone to try it out in my ain classroom this year.
Most of my students are self-starters, but I'm hither to tell you that your students don't have to be. Many teachers go a feeling that "my kids can't do that." Yes, they can! Detect and Note is no doubt an arroyo to reading that encourages and requires the students to call back deeper. But that doesn't mean it's not for your students… wherever they may exist in their learning journeying. However, I do recommend it for third form and up. I'g certain you can simplify it for younger grades, only this postal service is intended for upper unproblematic and beyond.
Today, I'm going to walk you lot through the steps I took to introduce it to my students. This will be cursory, so if you lot're looking for more information nigh what I'm talking about, you volition definitely need to bank check out the book.
Plan for this to take several weeks (but totally worth the time investment). I took each signpost and bankrupt it downwardly to three days.
24-hour interval 1:
I fabricated a chart for each signpost. I too have a wall display that you can larn more nigh by clicking here.
Then, I introduce the signpost (I read straight from the volume where the introductory lessons are listed) and complete the included passage practise (in the appendix).
Twenty-four hours 2:
We reviewed our signpost from the previous solar day and read a picture book. As I read, students were looking for an example of the signpost we were studying. They each had a sticky note to record their thoughts.
I plant an online resource that lists picture book examples for each signpost. You tin find the links on my Detect and Note Pinterest Board.
I have also added some of the picture books I used in my Amazon Storefront that you tin can view HERE.
If you have several of the books (either of the same copy or a variety of titles), yous tin can assign groups to read the picture books together and find the signpost.
Twenty-four hours 3:
On this last day, we read a section of the suggested chapter book. You can too find this recommendation in the lessons listed in the book. We talk about the example(s) that nosotros notice. These are commonly a little deeper than the picture books.
Lastly, I assign the students homework to find an example of the signpost in the chapter books they are reading on their ain. When they return the adjacent day, they identify them on the BACK of our chart we created on day 1. I read over them and conference with any student still lacking agreement. I then laminate the nautical chart so students can read their examples when needed.
After we finished the lessons for all the signposts, students used a Notice and Notation Sticky Annotation Organizer to respond to their reading each day during our book clubs. These organizers are laminated and are able to be used over and over. At the end of the day, students placed their sticky notes on a large organizer I made on rolled paper.
It was fun for the students to see the connections their classmates fabricated also every bit similarities they had!
I have added the Detect and Notation Glutinous Note Organizer to my VIP Library. If you aren't a fellow member, sign up below to receive your Complimentary download!
